At the start of this year, the Central Government replaced Aamir Khan with his fellow superstar Amitabh Bachchan as the face of the Incredible India campaign. In light of his recent recital of the National Anthem at the India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup, he is being considered by many, as an apt choice for the Perfectionist’s replacement. We list down 7 reasons why he is likely to emerge as the ideal face of Incredible India:
1. Led India to a Polio-free State
13th January 2013 was the date when India was declared a polio-free nation by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Bachchan, as the goodwill ambassador of the polio eradication campaign, played an integral role in this remarkable achievement.
2. Host of Kaun Banega Crorepati
Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) marked the return of Amitabh Bachchan to super stardom. But his stint on the small screen proved equally beneficial to the viewers of the show as KBC emerged as the aspirational show for middle class Indians. After all, who would mind sitting on the hot seat and being declared a millionaire by the “Superstar of the Millennium”.
3. Face of Gujarat Tourism
“Ek din toh guzaariye Gujarat me” (At least spend a day in Gujarat) became a catchphrase for every Gujju household who would welcome their guests from other cities with open arms. It was the baritone of BigB, all over the radio, that helped boost the tourism in the state to a considerably great extent.
4. Recipient of Four National Awards
It is ironic that when Bachchan was in his prime, he never fetched a National Award. In fact, he won the first one for Agneepath which released at a time when his films were repeatedly turning into box office disasters. He won the other three in the next decade when he was above 60 – for Black, Paa and Piku.
5. Brand Ambassador of ‘Save the Tiger’ Campaign
Bachchan’s voice was effectively used again in another Public Service Announcement (PSA) when he was roped in as the face of the ‘Save the Tiger’ campaign. His love for wild animals was not only evident by his efforts to save the national animal but also by his support to PETA’s (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) campaign to rescue Sunder, a 14-year old elephant, who was tortured and chained in a temple in Kolhapur, Maharashtra.
6. First Living Asian to be Waxed at Madam Tussauds
Bachchan was the first living Asian to be immortalized at the Madam Tussauds Museum in London when his wax statue was installed there in 2000.
7. Hollywood Presence
Not just the Hindi film industry (as he prefers to call it instead of Bollywood), but also Hollywood is in praise of the actor’s on-screen charm. This is why he held his own while sharing the screen space with Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby.
He might have taken longer than 52 seconds to recite the National Anthem. But that, in no rationale, can disqualify him from being the face of the Incredible India given his precious contributions to the country and its citizens. Amitabh Bachchan for Incredible India!
